Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20, 1964) is an American politician and attorney who is the 49th and current vice-president of the United States. She is the first woman to hold the vice-president and the highest ranking female official in U.S history. She is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. In addition she served as a United States senator representing California between 2017 and 2021. Harris was born in Oakland. Harris received her law degree from Howard University. After establishing her career as an Alameda County District Attorney, Harris was hired to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In the following years, she was the City Attorney of San Francisco. In 2003, she was the San Francisco district attorney. She was elected Attorney General of California in 2010, and was elected again in 2014. Harris was the United States junior senator from California from 2017 until 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the second African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. As senator, she fought for reforms to healthcare and federal de-scheduling of cannabis, a pathway towards citizenship for immigrants without a legal status and the DREAM Act, a ban on assault weapons, as well as progressive tax reform. She is best known for her pointed questions of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings.
